Bandwidth, Twilio, Intermedia: News Roundup for August

Our production this month included company impact reports, user deployment reports and our coverage of two vendor events, Twilio SIGNAL and VMworld.

Company impact reports this month included Speakap, an employee communications and engagement platform, and Cisco Webex; we also published a user deployment report looking at how Punch Technologies partners with Bandwidth for emergency communications.
We also published spotlight reports and analyst notes from Twilio SIGNAL and VMworld. Key highlights include:
Twilio shows IoT use cases for communications PaaS. On day two of its annual developer conference, Twilio shared use cases that leverage its IoT portfolio. Three years ago, it launched Programmable Wireless, designed to allow developers to access cellular connectivity via APIs. At last year’s SIGNAL event, it launched Twilio Narrowband, targeting use cases with IoT devices that do not require a lot of bandwidth or are not sensitive to latency. This year the company invited customers to share their experience in a designated IoT section on the show floor including Sensoneo, which uses Twilio Narrowband to improve inefficiencies in legacy waste management systems; Rently, a smart home technology vendor that enables home automation for rental properties with features that include keyless locks, electronic key codes and devices such as smart thermostats; and Raven, a connected car system with features that include internal and external dash cameras and a security system.
VMworld 2019: VMware announces AI-powered virtual assistant for Workspace ONE. VMware announced at its annual customer conference a new artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled virtual assistant for Workspace ONE (its digital workspace and unified endpoint management platform) that aims to provide a consumer-like experience for enterprise technology for the end user. Employees can use the assistant to complete IT- and HR-related tasks, such as procuring and registering a new device, troubleshooting Wi-Fi profiles, opening and managing service-desk tickets, and enrolling in company benefits.
On the M&A front we covered the acquisitions of contact-center platform Telax by UCaaS vendor Intermedia. We also covered Cisco's acquisition of Voicea, a startup we've followed closely since its early days.  Formerly known as Voicera, Voicea is a privately held company founded in 2016 that developed an enterprise voice assistant called EVA, which aims to improve team productivity by providing meeting transcriptions, voice search and action items.
